PennDOT officials say summer is travel season and while that means fun road trips and vacations for many, it also means more deadly wrecks.
“Between the Memorial Day holiday and the Labor Day holiday which is coming up, a lot more people are on the highways as a result there will be more crashes that we’ll see at this time,” said PennDOT spokesman James May.
Last Tuesday, a man and his 3-year-old were killed in a head on crash near Sunbury.
Over the weekend, a 49-year-old woman died after a crash in Taylor, Lackawanna County.
On Tuesday, a 39-year-old woman was killed after a head-on collision on Route 6 in White Mills, Wayne County.
A 22-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision in Fairmount Township in Luzerne County.
A 29-year-old man, a father on the way to visit his newborn, was killed in a single car wreck in Smithfield Township, Bradford County.
“People drive way too fast, aren`t paying attention, almost every day I have an almost — people pulling out in front of me and I have to react, swerve onto the shoulder,” said Charlie Lang of Greentown.
Drivers Newswatch 16 found said while it is sad to hear about the recent wrecks, they are not surprised by them.
“I drive a half hour every day you know to come to work and a lot of construction going on and people aren`t paying attention to the posted speed limits,” said Christina Burrell of Greentown.
“Three years and I got in four car accidents, two of them were illegal left turns and two of them people rear-ended me and one of them a girl was texting and driving, that was very bad. Drivers are getting worse and worse every day, I swear,” said Megan Ruddy of Scranton.
PennDOT officials said there are ways to keep yourself safe.
“Make sure you`re wearing your seatbelt, make sure you`re never drinking and driving, make sure you`re not texting and driving,” said May.
