TEXAS TOWNSHIP -- A woman was killed in a crash Tuesday in Wayne County and that crash also wrecked part of a fire department.
The scene of the crash was a car ripped apart and a big mail-hauling truck sticking out of a building here along Route 6 in the White Mills section of Texas Township, south of Honesdale.
Now we've learned that car was driven by Donna Chestnut, 39, of Hawley. She was killed.
The building is the White Mills Fire Department's banquet hall. It was severely damaged.
Firefighters showed us the mess they are dealing with inside. A wall was ripped apart and oil was spilled all over the floor.
Fire department President John Haggarty gave Newswatch 16 a look at the damage shortly after an insurance adjuster checked it out. He said it was so strange hearing a scanner call to the actual fire house.
"I wasn't sure. I heard the address and I thought 'Oh, my God, that's our firehouse.' I left work right away and came down and found this," Haggarty said.
This crash scene was a lot closer to Chief Michael Hill. He lives right across the street, heard the bang and jumped into action.
"It was pretty surreal. You don't expect it and when it happens right in front of you, actually in your fire house, it's pretty bad," Chief Hill said.
He didn't get to see the inside until after trying to care for the woman outside. His thoughts are primarily with her; a life was lost.
But the building does need work. No bingos or events will be held until they can get all this damage repaired.
Even after that, firefighters say they won't soon forget what happened right outside and inside their station.
