After state dog wardens removed all those chihuahuas from that home near Benton, the dogs were taken to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg before being transferred to shelters.
Officials with the state's Office of Dog Law Enforcement said the dogs are generally in good health. All 187 dogs were cared for around the clock by veterinarians last night. Most should be ready for adoption within the next three days.
Tiny brown dogs as far as the eye could see were in cages at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. All but two of the 187 dogs are chihuahuas. They were brought to the Farm Show Complex because there were so many of them.
"The dogs generally were in good health. They have some skin, ear and teeth problems as well as some eye problems, but they're all very treatable," Mike Pechart said.
Mike Pechart of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said once the dogs were brought to Harrisburg, they received constant care from veterinarians. The dogs were all later taken to animal shelters throughout the state.
"I offered to help and we are able to take 15 at this point. Possibly when our capacity lowers we will be able to take more," Danielle Ball said.
Danielle Ball is with the Humane League of Lancaster County. She said most shelters in Pennsylvania are over capacity...but in a situation like this, shelters pull together and help no matter what.
Out of the 187 dogs brought in officials said nine of them are puppies, including this little girl who is only one or two days old. Officials say all of these dogs need medical care.
"It costs approximately $200 per dog per day to stay in our kennel, to feed them, water them and for medical expenses," Ball said.
If you are interested in adopting one of the dogs you are asked to contact the animal shelters directly.
"Probably in three days they will be able to go to the shelter and adopt the dogs," Pechart said.
Animal shelters in Luzerne, Lycoming, Pike and Wayne counties have some of those dogs, as well as around ten other shelters across the state.
