UPPER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP -- A father and son were killed in a head-on crash on a bridge in the Sunbury area. It happened Tuesday night. Authorities do not believe alcohol was involved, and inspected both vehicles on Wednesday.

Investigators said the vehicle that caused the crash had an expired state inspection and registration. Kirk Mahaffey and his son Mayson both died from their injuries. State police said Kirk was not wearing a seatbelt, and Mayson's child safety seat was not the right type for his age.

Friends said Kirk Mahaffey, 22, and his three-year-old son Mayson, of Northumberland, were on their way to pick up Mayson's mom Tuesday night when they were both killed in a crash near Sunbury.

Police said the two were driving towards Shamokin Dam when a car going the opposite direction swerved into their lane and hit them head on. The Mahaffey's were taken to a hospital where they both died.

State police inspected what is left of the two vehicles. Investigators would not say what caused the driver of the Jeep Liberty, Brian Glass, to swerve into the other lane. State police do not believe alcohol was a factor, but the stickers on Glass' jeep expired almost two years ago. Brian Glass and his passenger, Cody Glass were wearing seatbelts.

According to Mahaffey's Facebook page, he worked at Bimbo Bakeries in Sunbury. His coworkers were not allowed to talk on camera but they said Mahaffey loved his son, boxer dogs and sports. The coworkers said his death hit them hard and he will be missed.

The two men inside the other vehicle, Brian and Cody Glass, are at Geisinger Medical Center listed in fair and serious condition. State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 570-286-5601.
