Andy Griffith Dead at 86

MANTEO, N.C. — Television icon Andy Griffith died today at his home in North Carolina.

Griffith was perhaps best known for his role as sheriff Andy Taylor in the 1960′s television comedy “The Andy Griffith show.”

Griffith was awarded the presidential medal of freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

In addition, Griffith produced and starred in the television series “Matlock” and was a well-known southern gospel singer.

Andy Griffith was 86.
