Fire Destroys Farmhouse
HERRICK TOWNSHIP — A house fire that ignited Saturday in Bradford County left an area family homeless, but it’s not just those who live inside the house who will be looking for a new place to call home.
Flames tore through a home near Leisure Lake Road in Herrick Township. Firefighters from five different companies were dispatched to the scene.
By the time crews got there, the fire was already out of control.
“The left corner of the front of the garage is where flames were coming up. Inside I had hay in there, and it just started fanning over,” said Dana Silkiss or Herrick Township.
Silkiss lived in the home along with his girlfriend and three children. Silkiss runs a horse-training business and in addition to his family, he also houses several animals on this property.
“Horses are ok, peacocks are ok, chickens are ok, cats are ok,” said Silkiss.
According to fire-fighters, the blaze got its start in the garage, and a steady breeze on Saturday helped the fire spread to the home. Silkiss along with two of his children were at home when the fire started.
“I was in the kitchen with my youngest daughter, she’s ten years old, and my eleven year old son was with me also. My daughter said ‘dad I see smoke outside,’ said Silkiss.
Silkiss said he does have insurance and plans to rebuild. In the meantime, he said the family will set up a temporary trailer on the property where the family can live, and continue to take care of their animals.
