MOOSIC -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are looking for some local input to help them pick a new name. Not only will the team be back in a new stadium next year, but they'll have a new nickname as well.

The home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees is undergoing some major changes. The Yankees nickname will change too before next season.

So, Newswatch 16 visited another baseball diamond in search of some ideas, in South Abington Township where some softball players think a name change is a good thing.

"They've had their name for a long time, so maybe they need a new name to get some fans in," said 10-year-old Kate Chickillo.

"The other people in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre will get to incorporate in it," added 10-year-old Emily Parry.

The players suggested names like the "Warriors" and the "Electric City Bombers".

You have to be over 18 to submit an idea for the name the team contest.
Team officials say the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees will be called something different by the end of the summer.

The Yankees are on the road this season while PNC Field is being re-built. But, the team's front office on Montage Mountain is still open. That's where you can submit your ideas, or you could submit them online.

You have until July 5 to enter in any nickname you think fits the team.

"I'd name them the Vultures, because vultures are mean and they sound really tough," suggested McKay Oustrich of Moosic.

You never know, the "Vultures" could be one of the six finalist nicknames picked in late July. Then, fans will be able to vote.
