A Frackvile firefighter and his family are getting help from their fire company.

Garry Peters and his family were picking through what was left of their Frackville home Friday, trying to save what they could.

Fire ripped through early Tuesday morning and Peters, a firefighter for more than 30 years, was injured trying to put out the blaze himself.

The blaze started on the porch and the cause is undetermined.

"You do your job to put the fire out but you never really understand the after effect, what the homeowner or what the people go through, after you pack up your hoses and you leave," said Peters.

Peters and his wife have two young children, a 6-year-old son and a daughter who turned nine just one day after the blaze destroyed almost all the family's belongings.

"We decided to celebrate a little differently, make the best of it and focus more on rebuilding and getting things back to normal," said Debra Peters.

Friday, Garry Peters' fellow firefighters of the Altamont Fire Company were holding their annual block party and collecting donations to help the Peters family.

"Anything we could do for the fire company to help him, we're trying to do because the kids lost everything, they don't have nothing, so we're taking any kind of donations, money, clothes, anything," said Allan Dziczek, president of the Altamont Fire Company.

The Peters family members said they are so grateful for the community support, and while they never wanted to experience devastation like this, they see what good has come out of it.

"Right from the start here, right clear on through, they have truly, tremendously helped here," said Peters.

The Peters family needs building supplies.

They hope to at least have a roof rebuilt by August.

The family also needs household items and clothing.

Monetary donations can be mailed to the Altamont Fire Company, P.O. Box 409, Frackville, PA 17931 or dropped off at the fire company block party on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16. Please mark your donation with "fire victim fund."
