State police say nine elementary school students were hurt when a bus crashed on the way to school in Lycoming County.

It happened a little after 8 a.m. Monday along Elimsport Road, near Montgomery.

Investigators said the bus rear-ended a pick-up truck.

That pick-up was stopped behind another school bus that was picking up students at the bus stop.

In total, nine students and the driver of the pick-up were hurt and state police said the bus driver who rear-ended the pickup was going too fast.

A banged-up school bus was just a few miles from the Montgomery Area Schools when state police said the driver slammed into a the back of a pick-up truck.

The pick-up truck wound up hundreds of feet away around a utility pole.

Sandie Carson was waiting at the school bus stop with her grandchildren along Elimsport Road and saw it happen.

"Very violent, the kids were hysterical on both buses," said Carson.

School district officials rushed to the scene. Parents went there too, some took their children home for the day. Officials said nine elementary school students had minor injuries.

"It was an upsetting situation for everybody. Fortunately everyone's okay and our hearts go out to driver of the pick-up truck," said Superintendent Daphne Ross of the Montgomery Area School District.

Sarah Golder and her children could have been in the path of that out-of-control pick-up. Instead, it ended up on the other side of the stopped bus. After the close call, Golder wants drivers of any sort to be more careful.

"People need to slow down here, it's a bad school bus stop, there's a hill, if everyone would slow down it'd be wonderful," she said.

Those nine students from Montgomery Area were treated and released from the hospital.

The driver of the pick-up had to be flown to a nearby hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

State police are still investigating, but said the bus driver who caused the crash was going to fast at the time of the wreck and will be cited.

PennDOT said Elimsport Road, just west of Route 15, was closed so crews could replace the utility pole.  That road opened around 1 p.m.
