A mother of three young children was supposed to celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday, instead, her family received the news that the woman from Scranton was killed in a crash in Lackawanna County.
Now, they want to know how it happened.
It was about 3 a.m. Sunday, Mother's Day, when, state police said, the SUV carrying Jeri Todd and Jason Wood of Scranton swerved off Interstate 81 and back on, then collided with tractor-trailer.
Neither were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the SUV. Jeri Todd was killed instantly.
Todd's family visited the crash scene in Scott Township Monday scouring for answers. They want to know why the mother of three was in the car that crashed there and if the driver was under the influence.
"I know one thing, we've got to stop this. We've got to stop people from drinking and driving we just have to. No more lives should be taken because of alcohol," said Todd's mother Kelly Stolarik.
State police said they are investigating alcohol's possible role in the crash, but the driver, Jason Wood, has not been charged with DUI.
Todd's family may never know where she was going.
Her family said Todd was a devoted mother of three who was to celebrate Mother's Day with her two daughters and son.
"She did everything in her power to make sure these kids were happy. They are devastated, they are going to be lost without her. She was an amazing, amazing mother," said the children's father Shaun Sampson.
He said Jeri Todd was a mother figure to many kids. She worked with disabled children in Scranton.
Though they said there are still a lot of questions surrounding her death, losing Jeri on Mother's Day may be a sign.
"She was taken on Mother's Day, so God must know she's the best mommy out there," added Sampson.
Jeri Todd's family is planning a memorial service for her this weekend.
Meanwhile, state police are still investigating the cause of the crash. They are waiting on the results of blood tests. So far, no charges have been filed.
