A war hero killed in a fire last month was laid to rest Friday in Lackawanna County.

Dozens gathered at Saint Eulalia’s Church on Blue Shutters Road near Elmhurst to honor retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hemphill.

The 69-year-old man was a volunteer and decorated war hero who earned the silver star and four bronze stars in the Vietnam war.

Last month flames tore through Hemphill’s home outside Moscow, trapping him inside.

The cause of the fire was never determined.

A Mass will be said Friday at 5 p.m. at St. Eulalia’s Church.  Hemphill will be buried with full military honors.
