One church in Luzerne County was hopping Wednesday night as its Greek food festival opened for business.
The Greek specialties not only satisfy the cravings of hungry diners, but organizers said they also help pay the bills.
It's dinner time at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre, and people are putting in their orders for homemade Greek fare.
“We didn't know what we were going to have for supper, and we've been trying to get here for a couple years, and finally made it, and not disappointed at all,” said Joe Marczak of Hanover Township.
Organizers hope more folks like the Marczak's come through the doors over the next four days.
“It's our main fundraiser for the church. I'd say it’s responsible for at least half of the church's income,” said Joe Knaus, volunteer.
Volunteers at the church cook up gyros, shishkabob, roasted chicken, spanakopita, and then of course, there's dessert! All are available for eat in or take out.
George Panagakos has been cooking Greek food for more than 50 years, and he always loves when festival time rolls around.
“We know how to cook it. We're cooking good stuff. We cook it again and again and again,” said Panagakos.
The Greek food festival runs through Saturday.
