Reaction to Child Porn Scandal

People who know him say Joseph Ostrowski was a standout football player at Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre and an all-around nice kid.

“Good kid, yeah, no problems, you couldn’t see anything of this nature coming, that’s for sure,” said Jody Busch of Wilkes-Barre.

Busch teaches at Meyers and knew Ostrowski before the 28-year-old became varsity football coach at Holy Redeemer High School in the Diamond City and before he was charged with trying to entice a minor to engage in child pornography. That is a federal charge that carries a penalty of 15 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.

“I’ve known him since he was a teenager, I guess. I was just surprised, he was a good kid. We always don’t know what’s happening,” said Randy Carlo of Hanover Township of Ostrowski.

Ostrowski was arraigned in federal court in Scranton Tuesday wearing athletic shorts and a Holy Redeemer t-shirt. He will remain locked up in Lackawanna County until a judge makes a decision about whether or not to continue to detain him later this week.

“Even with the procedures we have in place for criminal background checks and things of that nature, you really don’t know,” said Busch.
