A man died after a plane crash Saturday in Wayne County.

The Lackawanna County coroner identified the man as Jeffrey Gilbert, 67, from Rock Hill, New York.

State police said Gilbert was attempting to land his plane around noon at Cherry Ridge Airport in Honesdale. Troopers said something went wrong during the landing and the plane crashed in a wooded area nearby.

Emergency crews managed to pull the pilot out of the wreckage and immediately floew him to Geisiner Community Medical Center in Scranton. The pilot died a short time later.

A man who lives near the air park was outside mowing his lawn when the plane went down.

“I heard an engine rev up, then I heard a loud bang, and I said to myself, ‘Oh boy something happened up there,’" said Gerry Ciccone of Cherry Ridge Township.

An investigation is underway by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to determine what went wrong with the landing.

Authorities said the investigation could take up to a year.
