The city of Sunbury is paying tribute to men and women from all over Northumberland County who have served their country.
Banners tell a story about an American hero from Northumberland County. Crews were hanging the banners.
"We have 77 banners, which is really exciting. They go from Front Street all the way to Sixth Street in Sunbury. They're in Cameron Park as well," said Sunbury Elm Street Manager Kristin McLaughlin.
Three of the banners have extra special meaning to John Deppen who lives in Northumberland.
"This means a great deal to me personally. This is my grandfather, my great uncle and my father. All of them served our country. Each of their banners tell a story. It's a story that touches my life and my family's life," Deppen said.
The banners featuring Deppen's family members are hanging in a row on Market Street, and the banner featuring his grandfather, Clarence Deppen, is flying right outside the church he grew up attending.
"This is the church where my daughter was baptized. Now she can come to church with us and I can show her this is her great-grandfather and he served our country," Deppen added.
McLaughlin is part of the committee that started the Hometown Veterans Banner Program in Sunbury.
"The banner includes a photo of the veteran, their name, branch of service, their hometown and a sponsor for the banner," McLaughlin explained.
She added the banners will hang in Sunbury until Veterans Day in November. After that, the banners will be cleaned and returned to the veteran's families.
McLaughlin hopes the project will continue every year.
