The call is out for volunteers to help clean up the banks of the Lackawanna River in Scranton.

For years there have been efforts to improve the Lackawanna River to make it an asset for the area and the Lackawanna River Corridor Association has made that a mission.

Now it needs some help clearing trash from the river's banks.

"There's not a whole lot of heavy lifting stuff. We do have a shopping cart you might see in the background. We may find some more of them and some tires, but a lot of litter, wind-blown litter off the road and some bottles and cans, things like that," said Lackawanna River Corridor Association Director Bernie McGurl.

He is hoping volunteers will help clean the stretch between Olive and Poplar streets in Scranton on Saturday.

That stretch of river will be filled with all kinds of boats and people in a few weeks.

Of course organizers want a good turnout for the clean-up Saturday, but they want lots of people to show up for Lackawanna Riverfest on June 9. It celebrates the value of the river to the area, and is a chance for some fun too.

"We're bringing back the regatta this year.  We want to invite everyone in the county, get something that floats. The regatta is fun. You can decorate yourselves, decorate your boats, and we'll be giving out gift certificates for a lot of the local shops and merchants in the area," McGurl added.

There will be a duck race too, all at Riverfest in June.

The clean-up to prepare for all this is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you can help meet at the Olive Street Bridge.
