A couple hundred volunteers went out into their communities Friday and did some painting, gardening and construction.

It was all part of the United Way's Day of Action in central Pennsylvania.

The call for help went out and was answered across Snyder, Union and Northumberland counties.

Volunteers traded in their normal workdays to pitch in and lend a helping hand at area non-profit organizations.

A team of volunteers tackled the weeding and trimming needed outside the Donald Heiter Community Center in Lewisburg.

Inside, there were even more volunteers giving the center a much-needed once-over. Karen Cook and her co-workers from Merck Pharmaceuticals Plant near Danville are counted on by the center to do so much.

"People don't realize they don't get much help, only once a year through this day of action, united way day of action," said Cook.

"It's priceless, we would not be able to do the cleaning and maintenance work that's being done today, it would not get done. It isn't done," added Andrea Tufo of the Heiter Community Center.

That is where the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way comes in with its Day of Action and about 200 volunteers from local businesses.

A day like this has ripple effects, according to United Way president Keri Albright.

"It ends up being a lifetime of interest on their part and volunteers part, end up supporting it, volunteering there, taking family there," she said.

Organizers said more than 30 different businesses provided volunteers for Friday's Day of Action. That is a lot of places benefitting from just one day of service in central Pennsylvania.
