Some university students in Lewisburg are trying to do what our lawmakers haven't been able to, balance the federal budget.

A new course at Bucknell University offers students a hands-on approach to learning about the budget, deficit and debt.

Balancing the nation's budget is a problem that has stumped lawmakers in Washington D.C. for years, but if students at Bucknell University in Lewisburg have anything to do with it they will come up with a solution on their own.

"We can reduce the deficit as well as fix the budget by reforming the way the budget at the federal government works," said junior Tyler McClenithan.

For the first time.  Bucknell University is offering a course called Federal Budget Deficits and Debts.  The students come up with a plan to address the budget, trying to fix the nation's money problems.

"They have to come up with a proposal a majority agrees to.  They come up with different backgrounds and pre-dispositions," said Bucknell University's Gregory Krohn.

The students went to Washington D.C. last month to meet with lawmakers. Sophomore Ali Carey said some senators asked the students to send them their budget proposal once they finish it.

"Talking about working towards a privatized market, basically it is realistic but we don't have the hindrance of the political aspect," said Carey.

"You have to be able to critically understand how your choices are affecting real people's lives.  That's the fundamental lesson I'm taking away from this class," said McClenithan.

The students will present their final budget proposal to the public at the Trout Auditorium at Bucknell University next Thursday.
