A man from Lackawanna County is now facing murder charges for the December death of his girlfriend’s baby.
Investigators said the two month old was shaken on several occasions, which led to the infant’s death.
Investigators said Matthew Evans, 21, of Dunmore is now facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of two-month-old Jayden Cohen.
Investigators said Evans admitted to shaking the baby on more than one occasion and using drugs the night baby Jayden was rushed to the hospital.
He died a month later.
Investigators said in December Evans shook his girlfriend’s baby, causing serious head injuries and bleeding.
The infant underwent numerous brain surgeries, but never regained consciousness.
Now Evans faces first and third degree murder charges for shaking the baby.
Investigators said Evans admitted doing it because the baby was crying and he did it on different occasions.
Investigators also said he smoked synthetic marijuana the night baby Jayden suffered the most serious injuries.
The district attorney calls this case a tragedy.
“There’s just no explanation for it. In most cases there’s motivation, a reason why, but no reason really seems to make sense,” said District Attorney Gene Talerico.
Evans is due back in court on Friday.
If he is convicted of murder, he faces 40 years to life in prison.
