Parents, teachers and students gathered inside the Williamsport Area High School auditorium to speak out Monday night.

The school board recently announced a plan to close Sheridan Elementary School and close either Round Hills Elementary or Stevens Elementary to save money and deal with a growing number of students and aging buildings.

"I think it's a good thing that, you know, we certainly have these kind of meetings for people to give their voice, for sure," said Dennis Huff of Old Lycoming Township.

Many people at the public hearing carried signs and even wore t-shirts to save Round Hills Elementary School.

"If they shut down the school, our taxes are going to go sky high I'm afraid and it will be just another empty building in Williamsport," said Karen Reed of Old Lycoming Township.

Board members cannot legally make a decision about school closures for 90 days. When they do, the closures will not take effect until the 2013-2014 school year.

Some folks in the crowd even came to support Sheridan Elementary, which seems certain to close.

"I think as a Sheridan parent, we've known that Sheridan has been on the chopping block for a while but I just wanted to come and support and say that Sheridan has been a wonderful school for us," said Vicki Haussmann of Williamsport.
