It is now almost seven months since the September floods decimated parts of our area.
Shickshinny was one of the hardest hit, but that community in Luzerne County continues to make a comeback.
Two more businesses are back up and running in Shickshinny just in the past couple of days.
The downtown landscape of the community looks a lot different than it did just a few weeks ago, and even though businesses keep reopening, two buildings that stood in the downtown for decades are now gone.
The flood damaged what was the laundromat at the corner of Union and Main streets in downtown Shickshinny and the building is now only a memory. The future of the site still unknown.
J. Angelo's Pizza across the street reopened last week. During the September flood seven feet of water destroyed everything inside. Owner Jim Houseknecht said he never thought twice about rebuilding.
"It means a lot. It's a nice community. It just devastated so many lives all over the place but knowing every town has its own story this has many also," Houseknecht said.
Doug Thomas said there is a reason businesses keep coming back to Shickshinny.
"Born and raised here. This is home. They went to school here and it's home. It's a nice area," Thomas said.
The Skovish Brothers Pool and Spa Store reopened this week on Union Street. It's been part of the Shickshinny community for over three decades.
"It's amazing. It's hard to explain. We did this for our customers so they would have a local place to buy their pool supplies and now pet supplies," said Holly Reynolds Skovish.
Not all businesses came back. The grocery store will not return.
The old Wells Fargo Bank was demolished several weeks ago. According to the borough, Wells Fargo plans on installing a drive up ATM and planting some shrubbery.
Plans are still on schedule for a new bank to replace the vacant car lot just south of downtown and officials said that new bank, First Keystone, should be open by mid summer.
