A group is putting out a plea for volunteers to help clean up the flooding mess at parks in Wilkes-Barre.

They were hit hard by Susquehanna River flooding in September, leaving all kinds of mud and debris.

Saturday there will be a big effort to remove all that.

Tim Vohs and Clarice Bloom took their dog for a walk at the Wilkes-Barre River Common.  They found all kinds of mud when they got close to the river.

"It's a little messy, a little dirty but other than that I love it," said Tim Vohs.

The River Common was swamped last September by the Susquehanna River on both sides of the Market Street Bridge.

Nesbitt Park on the other side of the river was under water too.

When the river receded it left a lot of mud and debris. Now the group Wilkes-Barre Riverfront Parks Commission is taking action. It's a group of volunteers that plans to clean up the mess Saturday and wants help.

"Kind of messy still here but what are you going to do.  You just need some water and soap and that's it," said Clarice Bloom of Wilkes-Barre."

"The smell is a little funky down here right now, but other than that I think it's great," Vohs added.

There is debris in all kinds of places along the river. The water during the flood was 20 to 30 feet deep or more. This weekend all of it will be cleaned up.

"I think it's a good idea. Obviously it can use a lot of work and unfortunately it happens too often and a lot of stuff a lot of trash is brought down," said Mike Mazur of Larksville.

He was looking for valuables at Nesbitt Park. There is debris in spots all around him.

There have been partial clean-ups in the parks along the river since the flooding.

Saturday is a big one.

"It needs to be cleaned up.  It gives people something to do and a sense of pride in their community," Mazur added.

If you want to volunteer in the clean-up Saturday, just show up at the Nesbitt Park Boat Launch parking lot by 9 a.m. Wear your boots and work clothes.

The group wants to clean the river parks before a big Earth Day event being held for school kids next month.
