Wilkes-Barre Township’s fire chief who is accused of stealing from his department resigned his position with the township roads department.

John Yuknavich is charged with stealing more than $11,000 from the volunteer fire department. He was ordered to stand trial on those charges last month.

Yuknavich also pleaded guilty last month to simple assault for an incident involving his estranged girlfriend last November.

While Yuknavich is the chief of the volunteer fire department, he was a paid employee of the township in the roads department. The mayor said Yuknavich resigned March 8. He remains the chief of the Wilkes-Barre Township Volunteer Fire Department.
