West Point Cadets Hospitalized After Interstate Crash

Eight cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point are in the hospital after a wreck in Luzerne County.

It happened around 8 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 80 west in Sugarloaf Township between the Conyngham/Nescopeck and Mainville/Mifflinville exits.

According to state police, a van carrying the West Point cadets was heading west when it swerved to miss a vehicle that was pulling out of an emergency cross-over.

The van flipped and ended up in the opposite lane.

The driver of the van was not injured. Several cadets were flown to the hospital. The rest were taken by ambulance.

Troopers said the driver who used the emergency lane left the scene.
