A bomb threat Thursday morning at Mount Carmel High School touched off “mass chaos”, according to Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush.

Police said the threat was called in to the county communication center just after 10 a.m., claiming a bomb was somewhere in the Mount Carmel School District.

The school district was notified and a short time later the elementary and high schools were evacuated as a precaution.

State police brought in bomb-sniffing dogs and the schools were searched. Police said nothing was found.

Students at both schools were dismissed at noon, and according to Chief Hollenbush, that’s when the problems started.

“The problem was when parents were arriving they wanted their kids, but we had to make sure every kid that leaves the facility was accounted for,” Hollenbush explained.

“I assured the parents that all the students were accoutned for and they didn’t necessarily need to come pick them up, that we would release them in an orderly fashion.  Some parents were, eager,” said Mount Carmel Acting Superintendent Bernard Stellar.

Classes are scheduled as usual Friday.
