Tear it down. That is the word from Danville Borough officials who said a downtown building is unsafe and beyond repairs.

The condition of Doc's Shoes Sales and Repairs on Mill Street has gone from bad to worse, according to officials who condemned the place last July.

Neighboring Canal Street has been blocked off for fear someone could be hurt by falling debris.

People who pass by the old, deteriorated building have taken notice of the danger.

An inspector has deemed the place structurally unstable, saying it has to come down, said borough officials.

"I'll be glad when it's gone. I really think it will improve the appearance of Mill Street and be an asset to the other businesses when it's gone," said Terri Kutcher of Riverside.

Danville officials ordered the owner, Michael Barsh, to tear it down. Barsh could not be reached, and has about 40 days to start the process or the Borough of Danville could end up demolishing the building.

"You're looking huge liabilities. It's a shame. I can remember coming through as a little girl. The building was just gorgeous, but if someone can't take care of it then it needs to be just taken down," said Joy Hutton of Bloomsburg.
