Despite the tough economy, some new businesses in Lackawanna County are getting ready to open their doors.

The businesses are geared toward keeping a little more money in customers’ wallets.

Work is underway, getting a new business ready to open on Main Street in Dickson City.

The long-vacant Hollywood Video will soon become The Market Place.

Opening in mid-March, owners said people can buy fresh produce without shelling out a lot of green.

“We`re bringing in quality produce and quality deli at discount prices to the area because of the economy, the high prices of gas, the way everything is rising right now. We feel that there’s a need for more of that type of operation in the area,” said co-owner Maurice Abdalla.

At a new Goodwill store on Route 6 in Dickson City, employees were getting clothes and more ready for Saturday`s grand opening.

“Well in this economy I think it`s good and the green thing, I think, is growing. People don`t want to waste as much anymore,” said Christine Kobrynich, Goodwill retail director.

The store is Goodwill`s second in Lackawanna County.  Kobrynich said it will not only help the community, but will also help the non-profit continue to provide programs including adult day care.

“All the grants that we used to get a little easier are now tougher. People are all trying for the same dollar, so if we grow our retail, we`re less likely to depend on outside sources, that we can just kind of take care of ourselves,” added Kobrynich.

P&R Discount Grocery in Eynon opened back in July. Store managers said the place offers a variety of merchandise at about 40 percent less than big box stores.

Customers like Marion Whitecavage said every bit of savings helps.

“A lot. It really does help a lot. Certain things are maybe half price, certain things are maybe 25 percent off. So it just depends on what you’re looking for,” said Marion Whitecavage of Forest City.

The store near the old Sugarman`s carries everything from new baby items to frozen food.

Alison Cicci and her father shop at the place several times a week.

“It helps my father, I know we struggle. My mom works, so it helps paycheck to paycheck,” said Alison Cicci of Jessup.

P&R Discount Grocery used to be in Mayfield, but moved to the bigger location in hopes of growing the business.
