Those who live in Split Rock Resort in Carbon County said they are stunned after learning a husband and wife in their 70s were found dead inside their home in a gated community.

Police found the bodies of John and Mildred Carnochan Saturday afternoon after family members reported concerns about not hearing from the couple in several days.

Saturday night the Carnochan's missing Cadillac was found being driven by Greg Demage, 30, who later shot and killed himself inside the car.

Now people who live and vacation in that resort community are asking why.

“This is such a beautiful and peaceful place. It's sad to hear that something like that would happen to local people who live here,” said Dori Dodd of Pittsburgh.

The typically quiet resort community in the Poconos is rarely the center of a suspicious death investigation.

Newswatch 16 found state police vehicles still on the scene of the home along Wolf Hollow Drive in the Split Rock Resort.

It's the home where the bodies John Carnochan, 77, and Mildred Carnochan, 75, were found Saturday afternoon.

Missing from their garage was a 2006 Cadillac sedan, which was found Saturday night along Route 61 in Coal Township. The driver, Greg Demage, shot and killed himself inside the vehicle after police tried to take him into custody.

The resort area has a steady flow of both full-time residents, as well as vacationers who come from all over the northeast just to get away. Dodd and her husband spent the weekend at Split Rock, and they were very surprised to hear the news.

“It's just shocking. We spent the night last night over at Shenannigan's and yesterday afternoon we were there with local people and people who were visiting. It just seems like such a fun, safe, wonderful community it's shocking. I guess it can happen anywhere,” said Dodd.

One of the things that really has people in this community on edge is the fact that the suspicious deaths occurred in an area that is staffed by 24-hour security, and everyone coming in and out must pass through security gates.

“This is wierd. This is strange. You think you're up here in the Poconos and the inner city is coming to the Poconos it looks like,” said Dave Rindgen of Lake Harmony.

At this point state police are only calling Greg Demage a person of interest. Newswatch 16 learned that Demage was arrested just last year on a slew of charges, ranging from drug possession to terroristic threats.

Any cause or motive for the death of the Carnochan's is still unknown.
