Now that lent is underway, the 40 days before Easter. Many Christians have a dining dilemma on Fridays.

No meat on Fridays is the rule.

Fortunately, there are lots of tasty meat-free options in Lackawanna County, many of which happen to support a good cause, too.

While forgoing meat on Fridays is supposed to be a sacrifice for Christians during lent, it doesn't seem so bad when you get to eat this stuff.

VFW 5544 post in Jessup has sold 60 dozen Pierogies in this first week of lent.

Organizers said Lenten fare sales in years past helped pay for a new kitchen.

“I think it's just a yearly thing that they all look forward to. We get them from all over, Moscow even. They come down for our clam chowder,” said VFW cook Grace Canevari.

Canevari said they were sold out of the New England clam chowder by one p.m.

Still on the menu, Manhattan clam chowder, crab bisque, halushki and potato pancakes.

Here at VFW post 7215 in Throop the menu is different every Friday.

While it is a fundraiser, organizers said it's mostly about feeding the members and bringing people together with dishes like baked mac and cheese, corn fritters and tuna hoagies.

“They like broccoli and shells. These are older veterans who don't get home cooked food,” said Canteen Manager Diane Vanderburg.

If it's pizza you're craving, you can head to the Chinchilla Hose Company, where firefighters sell about 100 trays a week during lent.

“The first week does go well. We do have a couple mix-ups but we work out things, and we move on with it and get the pizza out,” said Mike Santarsiero of the Chinchilla Hose Company.

When Newswatch 16 was there, things were running like a well-oiled machine as people picked up the pizza that will help their community.

“I think every pizza shop does well. We do well in the community. Everybody supports the fire company,” said Santarsiero.
