In Luzerne County, flames wrecked a family's home, and a father saved his twin babies from the burning building.

The fire happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday along Summit Street in the Shavertown area of Kingston Township.

Neighbors said they saw the flames, and then saw a dad come rushing out with twin babies in his arms.

Firefighters found smoke and flames pouring out of the back of the house.

Before the rescue crews arrived, neighbors saw the flames and feared the worst, knowing there were twin babies inside. They arrived to find the dad rushing out with the two in his arms.

“All the neighbors came running out to make sure everyone was out of the house. We knew they had two young children in there,” said neighbor Andy Vaughan.

“It scared me, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, something’s wrong.’ I went back in the house, and after I got off the phone I came and checked on Andy and checked on everybody to make sure they got out okay,” said neighbor Rick Berlew.

While firefighters worked on the flames and hot spots, some neighbors said they took the twins to the house up the street to stay warm.

Some neighbors said they heard blasts from the house.

Shavertown Fire Chief, Gary Beisel thinks that sound was windows blowing out.

“(The father) says he heard the door bell ringing repeatedly, went to the front door there was nobody there, went to the back door saw fire and smoke, got a pan of water, threw the pan of water on it.  When it didn't go out, he got the kids and left through the front door,” said Beisel.

Now neighbors are just glad no one was hurt, especially with babies involved.

“I was scared. I said, ‘Is everyone okay?’ They said, ‘Yes,’ and I thought thank God,” said Berlew.
