A bookkeeper at a VFW post in Susquehanna County was in court today on charges she stole more than $20,000 from the organization.

Rosemary Griffis gave up her right to a preliminary hearing in district court in Susquehanna County.

Instead, Griffis came to an agreement with prosecutors and members of the VFW to begin paying back the money she's accused of stealing.

According to court papers, while Griffis was working as a bartender and bookkeeper for this VFW in Lenox Township, she would cash checks but deposit the money into her own account. This allegedly happened between October of 2010 and September of 2011.

Griffis told police that she started swiping the money when when her tips from her bartending gig were going down. She admitted to using some of the stolen money to fix her truck.

Griffis has now agreed to pay back the more than $20,000 she's accused of stealing from the VFW. She is expected to plead guilty soon, but on lesser charges now that this deal is made.

"The victims didn't want to see her doing any jail time. Apparently she's back to work and their primary concern is getting the VFW it's money back. They wanted to keep her employed and keep her paying the restitution," said Susquehanna County District Attorney Jason Legg.

Griffis is no longer an employee at the VFW in Lenox Township.
