Last week Wilkes defeated King’s 66-56 then beat FDU-Florham 81-69 on Saturday. The wins improved the Colonels record to (13-3) overall and (6-0) in the conference.
The Freedom Conference basketball player of the week is Matt Mullins from Wilkes University. The senior guard’s shooting scintillating and sensational. Mullins on the mark averaging 27 points per game in the Colonels two big conference wins.
“Oh! It’s a great feeling. We got a great group of guys. A great coaching staff and everything. And we are just playing really hard right now, and everything is falling together and we just got to keep it going and keep getting wins.” said Matt Mullins.
Matt’s march to the Marts Center took several twists and turns. Heavily recruited out of the Binghamton Area his journey began in Division I with the hometown Binghamton Bearcats and a 2009 NCAA game with Duke. From there one year at Broom County Community College before winding up at Wilkes.
“Good player out of high school. We didn’t get him out of high school we tried to and we got him on the bounce back, and he’s been a great guard for us and he’s just a competitor. An ex-football player. He brings that to the basketball court and he is a good all around guard.” said Jerry Rickrode-Wilkes head coach.
“It was definitely a transition. It was a great transition for me. I really like where I’m at right now and I’m really happy that I came here and I’m able to be part of this team right now.” again said Matt.
In the Colonels last game against King’s senior guard Matt Mullins chasing a record for 3′s made in a game. It is held by Chad Fabian out of Southern Columbia. He had 10. Mullins finished the night with 30 points and nine 3′s. One shy of the record.
“I didn’t know anything about how many he made. I was really surprised after the game. He made 9 and Chad had made 10. Chad was a recipient of being a lot of Dave Januzzi passes in those days.” again said Jerry.
“The key to shooting is definitely legs and staying square to the basket. You really need to make sure you get your legs underneath you. You would rather be long that short.” again said Matt.
Fundamentally sound and repetition heavy Matt Mullins is on a hot shooting streak and so are the Colonels.
