Attorneys for former Lackawanna County commissioners Robert Cordaro and A.J. Munchak made one last plea for lighter prison sentences before the two are scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.

Federal prosecutors allege Cordaro and Munchak while acting as majority commissioners took thousands of dollars in kickbacks from contractors looking to do business in Lackawanna County.

Cordaro was found guilty of extortion, racketeering, and money laundering and faces a possible maximum sentence of 200 years behind bars.

"You have to be prepared and you have to deal with it and understand I think everyone in their lives has unfair things happen. Things that they don`t believe they deserve," said Cordaro.

Munchak was found guilty of extortion and could spend up to 90 years behind bars.

"It went as I anticipated. I think our attorneys did a good job and hope for the outcome on Monday," said Munchak.

Munchak's attorney says he's been helping the former Lackawanna County commissioner get ready for his sentencing date.

"He has to get prepared for it. Anybody who is convicted of a crime has to get prepared to surrender," said Chris Powell, Munchak's attorney.

Both men are scheduled to be sentenced next Monday at the federal courthouse in Scranton at 10 a.m.
