More than 1,200 people have applied for about 130 positions at a Kohl's Department Store in Schuylkill County.

The new store is slated to open near Pottsville in the Fairlane Village Mall in early March.

This week there is a job fair at the Ramada Hotel in Pottsville.

"It's a little difficult to find work right now. I'm hoping my interview with Kohl's went well. It seems like a great place to work," said Janet Morgan of Shenandoah who interviewed for a position Tuesday.

Some folks said they were surprised so many people are competing for the positions; others were not so shocked.

In Schuylkill County, the unemployment rate is 8.8 percent, based on November statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The state unemployment rate of a 7.4 percent.

"I figured that it was opening and it has a lot of different things you can do and I figure that would be best for me," said Joey-Lynn Nies of Pottsville who is keeping her figers crossed for a call about a Kohl's job.

"I think I could be dependable and trustworthy and I can get the job done," said applicant Gina Salabsky of Pottsville.

Tough times, it seems, means tough competition for work in the area.

Kohl's company officials said they are excited about doing business in Schuylkill County.

"I need a job. That's pretty much it," said John Piptok of Pottsville.
