We are just wrapping up what is traditionally one of the biggest weekends of the season for ski resorts the Martin Luther King Junior holiday weekend.

After a mild winter, cold and some snow arrived just in time for most of the slopes around here.

It's a weekend that skiers and snowboarders travel from all over to hit the slopes of northeastern Pennsylvania, and many of them were surprised when they got to Elk Mountain near Uniondale in Susquehanna County.

They found snow. They found cold. They found winter.

Much different than back home in New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey.

"I think a lot of people didn't know that there's snow here, good conditions, especially today. Not many people here, great snow they're making, winter finally arrived so it's great at Elk," said Ken Goody of New York City.

"I don't think people realize it. They're in their backyards, they're golfing. It's time to get out and ski," said Jay Pollits of Greenfield Township.

Almost all the snow at Elk Mountain is man made. Elk was still pumping out snow as people skied on this cold day. After weeks of warmth, the bitter cold weekend really helped cover the slopes. Twenty-two of 27 are open.

"They've been making snow every night, as long as it's cold at night, the conditions are perfect, really nice," said Ernie Sebastianelli of Dickson City.

Thanks to the wintry weekend, Elk reports big crowds Saturday and Sunday. A good turnout on the holiday too.

"Winter finally showed up with a vengeance. It was very cold yesterday but sunny and beautiful today," said Jay Carpenter of Malvern.

The one problem this year is every time it gets cold enough to make snow, it gets warm right after. That is supposed to happen again this week. One thing is sure, winter weather came just in time for this holiday weekend on the mountain.

"With the weather we've been having, warming weather, the cold weather this weekend really helped. It was nice that they could get a lot open," said Paul Vaccaro of New Jersey.

Even though conditions are good, what skiers, boarders and, of course, Elk Mountain would like to see is some real snow to fall here on the slopes.
