In Scranton, some cars and homes were the target of vandals.

Someone spray painted graffiti in the city's hill section not far from the University of Scranton.

Scranton police do not have any leads in this most recent case of vandalism that they said happened sometime overnight. Neighbors in that area of Scranton said waking up to graffiti isn't all too unusual but the type of graffiti in this case is.

Carrie Gillespie and her housemates woke up to find a new addition to their apartment house.

Gillespie said the graffiti isn't unusual but unwelcome for her and her neighbors. It's common for people here to deal with criminal mischief.

"I'm happy they didn't break in to our house this time, because that happened last year too. At least it's on the outside, not in our house," Gillespie said.

The same graffiti tag, which police said looks like a cartoon ghost, cropped up on several houses and cars on Taylor Avenue and Vine Street sometime overnight.

"I've seen it before. It happened in the back. It's nothing new around here, but I didn't know it was around other houses so that's kind of weird," Gillespie added.

So far, police don't have any leads on who the vandals are, and they don't know if the graffiti is gang related.

Many of the people who live in the area are students at the University of Scranton. They said the vandalism, though strange, doesn't make them fear for their safety.

"I know there are gangs here and kids that like to cause trouble and rob university students right here in this hill section. So, I'm sure it could be something like that, but at the same time it could be some young kids just trying to cause trouble," said Nicholas Westendorf.

Anyone with information on the graffiti, or how it got there, is asked to call Scranton police at 570-348-4134.
