After a summer of financial woes, St. Rose Academy in Mayfield opened the new school year Tuesday morning.

According to academy board member Ralph Imbalzano, about 70 students are enrolled in the school for grades seven through 12.

The school formed in 2005 to fill the void in Catholic education in the Carbondale area when the Scranton diocese closed Sacred Heart Junior and Senior High.

Last month, St. Rose lost its campus to foreclosure.

Imbalzano said the financial services company that now owns the building has a verbal agreement with the academy to allow classes to continue.

The school received another blow last week when St. Rose administrator James Allen and five of the academy’s 13 teachers filed suit against the school for unpaid wages.

The lawyer representing those educators said they may make a public statement about their lawsuit later this week.
